Galileo Division Winners

Capping off a great season, 971 had fun time at the Championship Event in Houston.

After a rough start on Thursday, we started Friday ranked 33rd, won all six Friday matches, and ended up ranked #1 in the Galileo Division. Our scouting team did a great job and picked team 179, Children of the Swamp from Riviera Beach Florida, 3646, INTEGRA BAHCESEHIR from Istanbul Turkey, and 498, The Cobra Commanders from Glendale Arizona to be on our alliance for the playoff double-elimination matches. The way this year’s FRC game played out, the defense can be really tough and slow down high scoring robots. Our robot was really fast and agile so it was able to continue scoring even as defenders tried to stop it. With 179 also scoring well and our other partners playing defense, our alliance was able to work really well together and won the Galileo Division.

971 also received the Excellence in Engineering award for the Galileo and Roebling Divisions. After winning our division, we advanced to the Einstein fields, Mass and Energy. There our alliance competed with the winners of the other five divisions to determine the top two teams who would play off in the finals in Minute Maid Park - on the baseball field. We ended up ranked 4th out of the nearly 400 teams competing in the Houston Championship. which was an amazing accomplishment. There are over 3800 FRC teams from around the world and half of them feed into the Houston Championship. The last time we made it to the Einstein field was in 2009 as the third member of the winning alliance. This year we made it as the alliance captain. This is very hard to do. It is great accomplishment for 971 to perform so well.
