During the summer of 2009, 971 worked on a sheet metal swerve drive. Though it extended into the fall as well, this project was a great tool for current member CAD training and robot building.
During the summer of 2010, we worked on a 1/16 inch sheet metal drive train. Though this was solely a CAD project, we used the concepts we experimented with on this CAD model and implemented then onto this year's drive train, which is much lighter than last year's.
During the summer of 2013 the team embarked on their first "Third Robot" project. The third robot is a student led project to design and build a robot to play the previous season's game with a different approach. This was continued in the summers of 2014 and 2015 with the students working on increasingly challenging designs. The third robot project is a great way for new students to get involved with the team as the robot design and assembly proceeds at a more relaxed pace than during the main season and various types of training are offered throughout the summer. In 2015 the third robot won at Chezy Champs - an off-season competition put on by our friends at Bellarmine Preparatory - team 254.
