FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a fantastic program that gives students hands-on experience in engineering and technology. Students develop skills with machinery; generate ideas for solving difficult problems; produce results under time pressure; work together as a team; and learn “gracious professionalism” as they compete with teams from other schools.
Every January, FIRST releases a new challenge and gives every team six weeks to design, build, test, and ship a competition-ready robot. Team 971 has been taking on the challenges and building robots to meet them every year since 2002.
More information can be found at the FIRST Website.
All through out the month of March, there are multiple Regional Competitions throughout the country and then in April there are two Championship events - in 2017, they will be in St. Louis and Houston. Team 971 traditionally competes at the Silicon Valley Regional, which is held at San Jose State University. On Thursday, teams un-bag their robot and then participate in a day of practice matches. All day Friday and Saturday morning there are Seeding matches, and Saturday afternoon there is a single elimination competition between the top eight alliances. 971 also competes in a second regional. In past years they have attended the Sacramento Regional at UC Davis. In 2017, 971 will be attending the new San Francisco Regional at St. Ignatius High school.
